In the Breton language one says "Breizh", we say ordinary Brittany. Brittany is a peninsula of approx. 28,000 km2 in the northwest of France with approx. 2,972,700 inhabitants (2003). In the north it borders to the Canal; in the West and
South to the Atlantic Ocean. |

The flag of Brittany is called the Gwenn-ha-du, pronounced
[gwɛna'dy:],
which means white and black in
Breton. The nine
horizontal stripes (5 black and 4 white) represent the traditional dioceses of
Brittany into which the duchy was divided historically. The five black stripes
represent the
French or
Gallo speaking
dioceses of
Dol,
Nantes,
Rennes,
Saint-Malo and
Saint-Brieuc—while
the four white stripes represent the Breton speaking dioceses of
Trégor,
Léon,
Cornouaille and
Vannes. The
ermine canton
recalls the
ducal arms of
Brittany.
Some Bretons say that it is the only flag in the world which
does not have any
colours,
which is incorrect, but surely it is the only flag in the world which in a
parade is carried at arm's length over head. |

Because of the favourable position regarding the sea, the Breton fishermen are responsible for a third of the whole French fishing. Agriculture was for a long time obstructed by typical the bocage-landscape (bocage = small wood). At this moment however
Brittany is the largest horticulture area of France is and also cattle-breeding occurs on large scale. In Bretagne still many remains are found of the Celtic culture. You will find as well many prehistoric megaliths, among others in Carnac, in the south. Menhirs and dolmens are to be found also elsewhere in Brittany, like in the surroundings of Keraluic.
